Can #Friendica only count to 990 for some reason? A curious thing: I posted something that went relatively viral. I've received repeated notifications of more likes and reshares. But once the total number reached 990, i.e., the sum of shares and likes is 990, the numbers listed aren't going up any more, rather when one goes up, the other goes down. The sum remains 990. Curiouser and curiouser.
@Noam writes Most likely scenario is that we’re selecting up to 1,000 items (replies, likes, reshares, etc…) in a conversation, and not all of them end up showing.
Thanks @Hypolite Petovan - the true number is probably 1000, counting replies. Makes more sense than 990. I still find it bizarre that the number of likes / reshares can go down as well as up due to the 'selection'.
@Noam writes Depending on the sorting, older likes may slip out of the 1000 items selection window.
If those numbers are computed on the fly, rather than being aggregated and cached, then they will only be true if all posts get selected. When you get just the 1000 latest posts, the sum of will be constant and the individual numbers will be whatever count was in the current selection.

Suppose you had 600 likes and 400 reshares (plus an unknown number of posts in excess of the 1000 selected). Two hours later you refresh and there are now 500 reshares - and 500 likes - visible. The missing 100 likes are now among the unknown number of posts beyond those selected (accounted for).

The math behind this performance trick is simple, but I agree the outcome looks bizarre. Or, maybe your friends are actually colluding, trading a share for a like 😉
Yes, I understand the maths and the outcome. I'm puzzled by the calculation, counting only the 'latest' 1000. It suggests you can never really know how many times a post was shared and liked if it goes viral.
