That is an insane amount of data, and a fairly accurate one, I believe your numbers are right, but in relation to what you have read, they only report the numbers they either see, or that represent the message they are trying to convey, just my 2 cents;
https://github.com/swicg/activitypub-api/blob/main/OAuth%202.0%20for%20ActivityPub%20Activity%20Diagram.png
There's an example client here:
https://swicg.github.io/activitypub-api/examples/oauth/index.html
It tries discovery via RFC 8414 or getting the endpoints straight from the actor.
It then provisions a client ID using CIMD, FEP d8c2, or DCR (in that order).
It then tries to do an authorization code flow.
I'm interested in seeing it tested with more ActivityPub API servers.

In the @EDIT | don't follow! profile we creatd already a postString for that Projekt with a very limited time horizon.
Next step will probably be creating a activityPub #podcast handle on cast.tupambae.com by @utopiArte, the admin over there, as content colection and conversation about the idea itself in the EDITing post is already up and running.
Part of the details concerning the cast domain is to figure out how to organize the tools #castopod gives us at hand as it looks like it has quite interesting options to organize cooperation, as stated briefly in a tutorial page created on that site, result of the #learningBYdoing process while installing it: brief Castopod tutorial
Last but not least, we are still trying to drag @lizzischmidt the creator and promotor of the #sundayGimp community experience that is alive and running for over a decade on #diaspora* on to our shores, but federation with diaspora, from a technical point of view, definitely has seen better times in the past. Maybe this very cross community chat option, added right here and now, can help to improve the communication for all of us.
This inicial publication will federate quite well out into the vast space of the #fediVerse, but to see comments from the diaspora bubble and the #activityPub sphear, youll have to visit this original page on this friendica server.
Unless of course you are friendican yourself.
So, with no more further introduction, let's jam the #fediFolks!

Curious what other people think about this idea. What if federation security was re-worked to use target-assigned bearer tokens to authenticate GET/POST requests? This would remove the need for complicated signing schemes and reduce system load under heavy traffic bursts (as no cryptography is required).
A basic implementation could look like this:1. When instance A (
a.example.com) first attempts to federate with instance B (b.example.com), a POST request is made to a dedicated registration endpoint. (for discussion, we'll say it's https://b.example.com/activity-pub/register-instance). This request includes fields necessary for verification, including the source domain name, target domain name, and a securely-generated verification token. Other metadata could be included to allow instance B to selectively allow/prohibit federation based on other criteria, but this is optional.2. Instance B makes a POST request back to a dedicated verification endpoint on instance A (for discussion, we'll say it's
https://a.example.com/activity-pub/verify-registration). This request must include the target domain name and verification token provided in step 2.3. Instance A checks the verification token (and verify that it matches the target domain name) and return a successful value. The verification code must be invalidated after this call!4. Instance B, after verifying instance A's request, returns a securely-generated federation key back to instance A. This federation key is a bearer token used to authenticate all requests from instance A to instance B. This key must be unique to instance A!5. Instance A completes the original request with the
Authorization header set to Bearer {federation_key}.6. Instance B receives the request, detects the federation key, and checks it against the list of registered instances.
7. If the key does not exist or A has been defederated, then a
403 Forbidden error is returned.8. If the key is expired or revoked, then
401 Unauthorized error is returned. Upon receiving a 401 error, instance A should start over from step 1 to re-authenticate and complete the request with a new token. This process should not be repeated for recursive failures!9. If the key is approved, then a 200 OK response or 202 Accepted response is returned, and A can consider the request as successful.Advantages versus HTTP Signatures:- No cryptography requirements.
- Simple logic, no edge cases around HTTP query parameters or header order.
- Equally effective for all request types.
- Keys can be easily revoked or rotated.
- Supports authorized fetch and defederation use cases "by default".
Disadvantages versus HTTP Signatures:- Breaks the actor model - instances are required as a first-class concept. (but really, the actor model is basically dead already. you can't even federate reliably without a WebFinger server, at minimum.)
- Requires multi-request "handshake" before communication. (but this is already required in practice, since a signature can't be validated without first requesting the signing actor.)
- Out-of-band protocol - communication can't happen over ActivityPub / ActivityStreams because this is a prerequisite to authenticate any request. (but again, we already require WebFinger and some software requires NodeInfo for full support.)
So, what are your thoughts? Good idea? Bad idea? Did I miss something? Please let me know, I welcome replies here!

The only reasonable way to work with a VPSserver on the web is using the console. If you are not familiar with that don't worry, it is easy and the only thing you have to do is being able to copy/paste the commands displayed:
¡
Copy/paste only the codeBoxes like this one, located outside of the spoilers of this tutorial one after another without altering the sequence!Of course it is necessary to change the specific file names and passwords for you indiviual site, but that's all. promise!
On the console you wont be able to copy/paste with the keyboard ctrl-C/ctrl-V technique, you'll have to use the mouse "right click, chose option" technique.
This tutorial was created on a #debian #linux desktop environment.
There shouldn't be differences if you want to do this from a #windows machine.
The method used for communication between your local computer and the VPS server is called #SSH:

Most #fediVerse platforms have profiles on their own platform and/or a #mastodon profile, because that's the kinda standard thought and behavior. But actually to me it looks like the #friendica #communityForum page capabilities exceed by far what mastodon or others have to offer. Well, I haven't digged into the fedi clone of reddit to see if that would be an even better option. What is true tho is that forum.friendi.ca is already long standing and our community has gone a long way, so there is in general terms "no single point of failure" like in other projects that depend on one main figure and that's it.
I consider our helpers community experience here, with all the followers of our helpers page getting resend the help requests posted to the forum, chiming in to help out and solve issues, very positive. So this is a proven setup and could help lot's of other projects out here too. Actually I do think that if implemented and adopted, it even could have a positive feed back loop for friendica itself, but that's like something on another page.
So having forum.friendi.ca already up and running, why not support the fediVerse community opening our doors to those who fulfill certain basic community standards?
This server here (tupambae.org) as well is only mend to be a forum server, and of course it's doors are open for any #fediPlatform that likes to have an own forum page over here, yet somehow to me it look's like forum.friendi.ca is the first natural and ideal candidate for something like that.
Of course same goes for a #fediAdmin, #activityPub or #APIdeveloppers community support forum, if that is desired or useful.
Right now in general terms the fedi lives on using some tags or maybe some a.gup.pe addresses, but it's actually us who hold and develop that option for more than a decade now inside the federation itself.
Was that more clarifying

friendica VPS setup on ubuntu 22.04 LTS
Hi,
I'm working on my first #friendica #VPS installation, here you'll find my initial post about general thoughts like what distro to use, size and costs.
I'm using the tutorial "creating a friendica server - ubuntu" by @Hank G ☑️.
As of now I'm doing well in the process and want to start this post to document differences and questions while installing the server.
This server is going to host an already existing friendica node I have to move from another hosting provider. That means that for example the DB doesn't have to be created from scratch but moved and other smaller details.
I will try to address the different steps of installation in answers to this post and appreciate help, ideas and observations.
I'm doing this from a #linux desktop environment from the console but there shouldn't be differences if you want to do this from a #windows machine.

are there "best practice" PHP Versions?
I wonder if there are PHP versions to recommend when running friendica.
In older versions (2019-12 + 2021.01-04) I experienced problems when creating connections getting "The network type couldn't be detected. Contact can't be added." messages using PHP 7.4 (as the install instruction stated 7.1 or higher).
After downgrading to 7.1 it looked like connecting started to work well.
Right now I'm working on a new VPS for tupambae.org:
Friendica 'Giant Rhubarb' 2023.05 - 1518
PHP 8.2.10
(it's a beta testing of a hoster) but some how not everything works as expected.
I just tried to contact the public forum @Rugby from this profile here.
Over here, the contact is displayed as follows:
(Group) I follow them (#DFRN (via #ActivityPub))
but over there this profile doesn't show up.
No problems for now with establishing connections with mastodon profiles and I just tested a friendica 2021.01 profile and that worked to.
Should I downgrade the PHP version and if so to which one?
Also, I posted a help request to the helpers page about how to set up the forum pages properly as the don't work "as expected" but it doesn't look to me as if the post was received by the helpers forum:
If not, what would be needed to cover this? I lack so much knowledge about #activitypub and federation that I am unsure if this question is smart or stupid, but dipping my toes in lemmy waters, it is a question that has been spinning in my head.
